Strange, I've never seen the doppelganger companion be sacrificed to give extra power in the Infernal Warlord fight, is that occurrence specific to your class?

Turning the Doppleganger into more blood helps subvert the blood costs for abilities. It's pretty easy to bring them back too, so it's fairly common when levelling.
