I think you are mixing up the Mr. Hound sidequest with the Halloween Event Only: Mystery Hound sidequest. In the Mr. Hound quest, he instead takes you to the quiet grotto to meet his pups, allowing the affinity bar to reach its maximum.

I normally do not normally try to tell people how they should play this game over their own choices, but this does lock you out of Mr. Hound as a companion, or at least says so in the pop-up optional quest for selling them whenever you pick up one of the puppies, not only that, but the fence the quest points to sell them was in the now defunct Gatlands. Also, I personally would not want to take away the puppies of my favorite companion.
Nor of any fictional or nonfictional animal.

Listen, Bog Pest is by far the best companion for the game, especially if your grinding for any of the fishing quests. The Bog Aura was great at keeping you alive, and the boost to rare fishing bait drops is insane, even for just grinding money instead of fishing.

I was a big fan of Chef Goose personally. He's a very low maintenance companion and very good at staying away from fights and out of trouble. He's also got a bunch of interesting lines for different locations, monsters, and their relevance to cooking.
Practically speaking, I just think he was pretty good since he basically let you ignore the hunger/thirst system. Whenever you kill an enemy, he auto-harvests ingredients from it, and when you're at 25% or less on either meter he'll automatically cook something for you from what he has available. Not to mention just having him set as your companion as buffs your HP and MP regen, and sometimes mid-combat he'll throw you a random food item with a beneficial effect. (There was a short time before they restricted the list and some players died from random avocados thrown at them mid combat. . .)
He's probably not the best companion out there, especially considering he doesn't contribute much straight damage to fights, but I just think he's neat and nice to have around.
